It might be better to read it as DickensвЂ™ initial readers did вЂ“ in serial format, a little bit each week or month instead of forcing it down in a matter of days or weeks. IвЂ™ve seen people comment that this story can only be handled in small doses. Dickens eventually pulls it together and realizes heвЂ™s writing a novel and not another series of sketches and starts building a more unified, focused story. This is evident in the beginning of the novel, where the story rambles about with no sense of purpose. But now, he had to start cranking out more copy than anticipated in serial form, without a clear idea of where he was headed. Despite this being his first novel, Dickens fought to reverse the situation and won. The illustrations would come first and then Dickens would write a corresponding story. Originally, The Pickwick Papers was to be a series of illustrations connected by short stories. This makes sense itвЂ™s his first novel, and it wasnвЂ™t originally supposed to even be a novel. Any Dickens is better than many other things you might read, in my opinion, but I think his worst novel is The Pickwick Papers. I really need to move on to the worst part of this post, so IвЂ™ll leave you with one more teaser about Bleak House вЂ“ someone spontaneously combusts! This book has more amazing secondary characters than any book outside of Harry Potter, with Harold Skimpole, Mr. He also attacks those who focus so much on giving to others they neglect their own families, creating one of the best secondary characters in all of literature in Mrs. DickensвЂ™ blasts the judicial system, but he doesnвЂ™t let that take away from the story. Jarndyce, a dispute over a will and inheritance thatвЂ™s been going on for decades. The action centers on a court case, Jarndyce vs. Like all of DickensвЂ™ novels, Bleak House does have a moral, although I donвЂ™t think heвЂ™s as preachy here as he can be elsewhere. You want good things to happen to her, whereas with some of DickensвЂ™ more simpering heroines you sort of want something bad to happen to them so they finally show a little personality, but usually that doesnвЂ™t even work. Her brains, intuition, and strength keep her from becoming obnoxiously sweet and fragile. SheвЂ™s smart, insightful, caring, and unselfish. Esther seems more real than most women in DickensвЂ™ novels, something worthy of carrying a story. SheвЂ™s not sickly sweet like Little Dorritt nor awful like Estella. Esther stands out from the other DickensвЂ™ women. The story weaves together several different narratives, but Esther is our focus. The story is so much bigger than that, centering around Esther Summerson, John Jarndyce, Richard Carstone, and Ada Clare. DickensвЂ™ writing influenced his friend Wilkie Collins, and I bet he influenced Sir Arthur Conan Doyle too.ДЄnd yet, this is not Detective BucketвЂ™s story.

The job of detective was new back then, and this story was written well before the obsession with CSI and police procedurals. Bleak House is one of the first detective stories, featuring Detective Bucket investigating a mysterious death. My vote for the best is a novel overflowing with kooky characters, crazy coincidences, blind love, and mystery вЂ“ Bleak House. While I like Great Expectations, itвЂ™s not my favorite DickensвЂ™ novel. But, heвЂ™s also a marvelous storyteller, character creator, and novelist. It makes me sad that most people read вЂ“ or pretend to read вЂ“ Charles DickensвЂ™ Great Expectations in high school and then never read him again.
